Complete 30-Hour Course
Enroll in and complete a CA DMV-approved driver education program.

- Pass each lesson quiz with 70% or higher
Step 2
Get Your Pink Certificate
Your Certificate of Completion (DL 400C) will be mailed to you.

- Keep this pink certificate safe — you'll need it at the DMV
Step 3 — Age 15½ minimum
Take Written Test at DMV
Bring your certificate and pass the CA teen knowledge test (DL 5T).
- 46 multiple-choice questions (teen DL 5T)
- Need 38 correct (83%) to pass
- Adults 18+ take the shorter DL 5: 36 questions, 30 correct
- Bring: certificate, ID, proof of residency
