Step 1 — Age 15½ or older

Complete 30-Hour Course

Enroll in and complete a CA DMV-approved driver education program.

  • Pass each lesson quiz with 70% or higher

Step 2

Get Your Pink Certificate

Your Certificate of Completion (DL 400C) will be mailed to you.

Step 3 — Age 15½ minimum

Take Written Test at DMV

Bring your certificate and pass the CA teen knowledge test (DL 5T).

  • 46 multiple-choice questions (teen DL 5T)
  • Need 38 correct (83%) to pass
  • Adults 18+ take the shorter DL 5: 36 questions, 30 correct
  • Bring: certificate, ID, proof of residency
